From humble beginnings in Mum’s kitchen, A Little Light (like many home based businesses) gradually grew to take over the shed, the spare bedroom, the hallway, and eventually the lounge and dining rooms. By 2008 it was time to give Mum and Dad back their house, and find a bigger space for what was rapidly growing into a nation-wide business, stocking many of the most beautiful furniture and home ware stores around Australia.
Westgarth Village, in the heart of Northcote, became the new home for A Little Light. This wonderful space provided not just a big workshop for our rapidly growing business, but a beautiful shop front on High Street to showcase our work.
I had some lovely delusions in the early days, of wearing nice clothes to work, and feeling polished and professional in this lovely retail space. Reality soon crept in, and I spent many years running between the workshop and the shopfront, dressed in my old jeans and a t-shirt, with generous splatterings of wax on my clothing.
Alongside our candles, our shop was filled with beautiful handmade gifts, featuring work by many Australian artists and designers, with a strong emphasis on natural forms, materials and textures. Our loyal customers came back again and again to find unique gifts for birthdays, house warming presents, anniversary gift ideas and thank you presents. Each Christmas we decked the halls with an abundance of beautiful handmade Christmas gift ideas and decorations.
In early 2015 we relaunched alittlelight.com.au and took our lovely little shop online. While we were sad to say goodbye to Northcote, this change has allowed A Little Light to grow, and establish many new stockists of our handmade candles across Australia.
Our collection of handmade gifts online is still growing and we hope to soon make it a worthy reflection of our shop in Westgarth Village. Thank you to all our loyal customers who have followed us online and continue to support not just A Little Light, but the work and livelihoods of our fellow artists and makers.
